A glimpse of classical performing arts in Kyoto

Finished your itinerary today? There is one more thing to do; whether you are a tourist or connoisseur, you might be interested in going to a theater. Visit a unique theater in Gion where old traditions are still alive. If you walk down the stone-paved Hanamikoji Street to the south from Shijo Street, you will find a theater on your left called Gion Corner. Also on your way to the theater you are likely to find a beautifully dressed Geiko or Maiko girls. It has been a popular night spot since 1962, where you can experience highlights of Japanese traditional performing art. One-hour show of the following seven different performances is held twice times nightly from March to November except July 16, August 16; Kyomai: dance performance by Maiko, Gagaku: imperial court music, Koto: Japanese harp, Kyogen: traditional comic play, Bunraku: puppet play, Kado: flower arrangement and Chado: tea ceremony.

From March 1 to November 30, the show begins at 6:00pm & 7:00pm. In winter the theater opens for winter performance (the program is subject to change) for one show a night on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays; closed from December 29 to January 3. Reservation is not required, but if you have a chance to visit the TIC or Kyo Navi at JR Kyoto Station's second floor, you can get a discount coupon (up to 5 people per coupon) reducing the door charge from \3150 to \2800.

Entering the theater, a brief gallery on Kyoto's five traditional entertainment areas (Gion-kobu, Miyagawa-cho, Ponto-cho, Kamishichiken, Gion-higashi) welcomes you together with an exhibit of Maiko's hairstyle and ornamental hairpins with seasonal flowers called Hanakanzashi. Multilingual explanation is available to help you appreciate the show. Towards the end of the show, you will get an insight on Japanese traditional performing arts. Enjoy!
