Surrounding of Kifune Shrine and Eizan Railway
*Eizan Railway Momiji Tunnel's lit up will be held until around 21:00.
Touro lanterns will be set along the street of Kibune area which is located at the northern part of Kyoto city, and the place will be illuminated with subtle light. Maple leaves will be lit up at surrounding of the Kifune Shrine. The maple tunnels that runs Kibune-guchi Stn., Ninose Stn., and between Ichihara Stn. and Ninose Stn. of the Eizan Railway, will be lit up as well.

Maple Leaves Lit-up in Takao

Sanbi (Takao, Makino-o and Togano-o) is one of the popular sightseeing spots for autumn colored leaves in Kyoto. Approach to the Jingo-ji Temple, along Kiyotaki River and surrounding of Saimyo-ji Temple, will be lit up.
*Kozan-ji Temple and Saimyo-ji Temple will be closed at 17:00.

Shokoku-ji Temple
Hatto Hall, known with its "crying dragon," Kaizan-do Hall and Hojo (Abbot's Quarters) will be open to the public.

Gorgeous wall paintings by Kano school in the Shin-den Hall, main statue of Fudo Myo-ou, Shoin study room and precious treasures of main hall, will be open to the public.

Autumn Special Opening of the "National Treasure, Togu-do Hall"

Ginkaku-ji Temple
Ginkaku-ji Temple was built by Yoshimasa Ashikaga. Togu-do Hall (National Treasure) is a special tea ceremony room where origin of tea ceremony, flower arrangement and incense manners prospered, and will be open to the public.
Entry: 1,000 yen (additional 500 yen will be required for general entry to the temple)

Kodai-ji Temple
This temple was built by Kitano Mandokoro (often called Nene), who was the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The temple's elegant maki-e lacquerwares are especially famous.

Special Opening of "Kobuntei Tea Ceremony Room"

Shoren-in Temple
Shoren-in Temple was used to be Awata Gosho Imperial Palace. Kobuntei tea ceremony room was used as a study room in the Edo period. During the special opening period, visitors are able to enjoy the formal tea ceremony.
Entry: 1,000 yen (matcha or sencha green tea with sweet)
*Additionally, general entry fee of 500 yen is required.

Tofuku-ji Temple
Tofuku-ji Temple is a popular autumn sightseeing spot. During the special opening period, the temple doors open from 8:30 in the morning.
●Special opening of Tsuten-kyo and Fumon-in garden and Kanpu.
●Kanpu and Hojo garden will be open to the public.
●Ryogin-an, the designated national treasure garden designed by Shigemori Mirei will be open to the public.

Soken-in Temple is the family temple of Oda Nobunaga and also was the place where Rikyu studied Zen practice under Kokei monk. Obai-in Temple's Kuri is the oldest existing temple building of its kind in Japan. Korin-in Temple's main hall, front gate and Kara-mon gate were built in the Muromachi period and these are said to be the representative buildings of Zen architecture.

Raigo-in Temple in Ohara
This temple is known as being the main Dojo (central training center) of the Tendai Shomyo. The hanging scroll written by the head of the sect, Ryonin monk, and other valuable treasures will be open to the public.

"Ceiling of Flower" Special Opening at Hiraoka Hachiman-gu Shrine

Colorful 44 flowers are painted on the ceiling of main hall which were drawn in the Edo period.

Momiji Maple Festival


Hieizan Maple Festival at Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple17-11-28.bmp

Maple leaves on Mount Hiei will start to color earlier than the tress in the city. The festival will be held at the Yokawa area.
Access: From Keihan Bus or Kyoto Bus "Enryakuji Bus Center," change to another bus and get off at "Yokawa."

Surrounding area of Togetsu Bridge in Aarashiyama

The surrounding area of Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama is one of the most famous and popular autumn sightseeing spots in Kyoto. Traditional boats will run on Oi River and many fun events will be held on the banks.

Yugiri Festival
Seiryo-ji Temple
Nov. 12 (Sun.)
Buddhist ceremony starts from 10:30
Seiryo-ji Temple is home to the grave of Yugiri, a famous geisha who was very popular in Osaka, along with Takao in Tokyo and Yoshino in Kyoto. A memorial ceremony will be held for her on this day and the Tayu of Shimabara (head geisha from Shimabara district) will perform dance and join the "Arashiyama Maple Festival" on the day.

The 24th Kamamoto Maple Festival and Pottery Fair
Around the pottery production areas near Sennyu-ji Temple (Between Tofuku-ji and Sennyu-ji)

Gallery, pottery fair and pottery studio visit will be held near the Tofuku-ji Temple and Sennyu-ji Temple during the best time of the autumn colored leaves.

This is a popular autumn event of Kyoto to enjoy the wonderful autumn day in Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three tea master schools of Urasenke, Omotesenke and Yabuuchike will attend each day for the tea ceremony.

The 32nd Memorial Exhibition for Ryoma Sakamoto

Gallery Ryoma (2F of Wood Craft Gallery "Suya")
November 15 is the birth day of Sakamoto Ryoma as well as the anniversary of his death. This exhibition is held every year for Sakamoto Ryoma and his related items (Ryoma's properties, documents written by Kaien-tai, documents kept at Suya) will be exhibited at the 2F gallery.

The 41st Autumn Antique Book Festival - Antique Book Kuyo Services and Outdoor Used Book Fair

This large scale book festival is organized by the Kyoto Antique Book Association. About 200,000 old books will be sold and it's a great chance to get good books for reasonable prices.

This is an elegant Heian-period poetry game that aristocrats in those days enjoyed playing. A special bird-form sake cup (U-sho) will be released on the stream in the precinct and participants have to improvise a poetry before the cup reaches to him/her.

In the precinct, the "Chikara-dango (rice dumpling)" will be offered for free (first 1,000 visitors) and the special prayer will be given by the mountain monk from 11:30.

For 10 days and 10 nights, people chant a sutra and wish happiness for after the death.
On the 15th, Neri-hoyo prayer will be held. The main Amida statue will be open (entry: 500 yen) and rice porridge with azuki beans will be offered (charged).

Mountain Opening Ceremony for Kuya Priest

Kuya-do Hall (Kosho-ji Gokuraku-in)
The special memorial service for Kuya priest will be held from 13:00. Also tea ceremony, special Odori Nenbutsu (dance and chant prayer) and Rokusai Nenbutsu chant will be offered to the deity.

Japanese Lacquer Urushi Festival

Kokuzo Horin-ji Temple
The Kokuzo-bosatsu main statue is said to be the guardian god of the lacquer ware industry and craft techniques. The kyogen performance will be dedicated to the deity on this day.

Memorial Service for Brush

Shokaku-an in Tofuku-ji Temple
This is a special ceremony to thank to the used pencils, pens and brushes and which will be held in front of the brush hill. A large bon fire will be set in front of the brush hill.

Memorial Service for Buddhist Rosary
Nov. 23 (Thurs., national holiday)
Sekizanzen-in Temple
Used Buddhist rosaries will be burnt together after the memorial ceremony. First 1,000 visitors will be able to receive a rosary bracelet for free of charge.

Hitaki Ritual Fire Ceremony
Making a ritual fire has been an old tradition in Japan, and is often called as Winter Festival as well. People show their gratitude for the God for good harvest of the year. Many shrines in the city will hold the fire ceremony in November.

This is a ritual to get rid of people's sin by fire spirit.

More than 100,000 special wooden amulets gathered from all around Japan will be burnt together after a ceremony. This is one of the largest scale fire rituals of this kind in Japan.

Kyoto City Archaeological Museum
Special Exhibition "Wishing for Attainment of Heaven or Jodo upon Death" (TBA) ―Emperor Toba and Toba Imperial Villa with Kongoshin-in Temple ―

The ruin of Kongoshin-in Temple of Toba Imperial Villa (Fushimi Ward) was built by Emperor Toba in the end of Heian period as a part of Tanaka-den palace. By research by excavation, Shaka-do Hall, the Nine Statue Amida Hall and several ponds were revealed. Through these unearthed goods, this exhibitions shows wish of people of that time to go to Gokuraku Jodo (going to Amida Pure Land after the death).
