Kyoto Tanabata Star Festival17-08-1.bmp

Tanabata is a traditional Japanese festival which people make their wish on the stars once a year. Wishes are collected from all around Japan and Kyoto-style Tanabata Festival will be celebrated. The "Milky Way illumination" created with bamboo and lightings, and an exhibition of various art objects, Tanabata decorations at the shrines and temples, night-time special light up and so on will be held!

Ukai is a traditional fishing method using cormorants which was read in the ancient poem of 9th century by Narihira Ariwarano. Ukai performance in Arashiyama is one of the most attractive summer events in Kyoto. In the dim light of torches, fisherman release trained cormorants to the Oi river and catch fish. This is a joyful night to enjoy the dinner in a spacious boat and to watch the performance of Ukai.

Around Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple
On the day of memorial service, a large lanterns shaped in Jizo Buddhist statue saint will be set up around the temple with some thousand lanterns illumination in Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple. At the surrounding houses, the Chochin paper lanterns in which pictures are painted by children will be hung under eaves of each house.

Gojo-zaka Pottery Festival

Along Gojo Street (between Higashioji and Gojo Bridge)

This is one of the main events of Wakamiya Hachiman-gu Shine's Annual Festival to offer a prayer to the god of pottery. Many ceramic and pottery wholesalers gather at this event.
A large scale pottery fair started in the early 20th century at Gojo Street where the Kyo-yaki (Kyoto style pottery) was originally born. About 400 pottery stores are open on Gojo Street and some 500 thousand people visit the festival. Not only Kyo-yaki but many other famous potteries from Japan (Arita, Karatsu, Shigaraki, etc.) will be available with 30-50% discount price.

The Gozan Okuribi Ritual Fires is the representative event of Kyoto's religious obon period. It is believed that spirits of deceased people come back to this world at the beginning of the obon period and they must go back to the other world as obon finishes. The city will be surrounded solemn atmosphere and many visitors come to Kyoto to watch the event. First, the Dai character will loom out of Mount Nyoigatake in Higashiyama area. Then Myo on Mount Nishiyama of Matsugasaki and Ho on Mount Higashiayama. Funa-gata character on Mount Funayama at Nishigamo area, and Hidari Daimonji character on Mount Okita in Kinugasa. Finally, Torii-gata character on Mount Mandara in Saga area.

Toro Nagashi, a Buddhist ceremony in which paper lanterns are floated down a river will be held around 19:00-21:00 (reception open from 10:30-20:30) at Arashiyama Nakanoshima Park. Torii-gata's okuribi ritual fire can be viewed as well. Anybody can join the ceremony.

Nagoshi Summer Purification Ritual

Shimogamo Shrine
This is an annual ritual that people visit the shrine and pray for a safe and healthy life in the year. A traditional festival is held at night in which men jump in Mitarashi Pond and compete to get as many sacred amulets as possible.

Rokudo Mairi Spirit Welcoming
Aug. 7 (Mon.) - 10 (Thurs.)
Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple
During these four days period, people visit this temple and ring the bell, which is said to reach to the underworld, to welcome the spirits of deceased family member. Many stalls will be lined along the Matsubara Street until around 22:00.

Spirit Welcoming and Sending Off
Aug. 7 (Mon.) - 15 (Tue.) & 16 (Wed.)
Senbon Enma-do Temple
Ceremony of welcoming spirits of deceased family members are taken place between 7th and 15th, and sending them off to the underworld will be held on 16th. Rokusai Nenbutsu Buddhist ritual will be held on the 14th from 19:00.

Spirit Welcoming and Rokudo Mairi

Senbon Shaka-do Temple
Ceremony of welcoming spirits of deceased family members will be held, and sending them off to the underworld will be held on the 16th. The statue of sitting Shaka Nyorai will be open to the public.

Rokujizo Meguri (Visiting 6 stone statues) at the Gate of Kyoto's Main Road

Fushimi Jizo, Toba Jizo, Katsura Jizo, Tokiwa Jizo, Kurama-guchi Jizo, Yamashina Jizo
This is to visit the 6-jizo-places along the old high-road of Kyoto. The places where these jizo statues are located are the old gate of main road (Kaido) in the old days. With hanging the paper which will be given at each jizo place to the front door of one's house, it is said to ward off the illness and to bring good fortune in. This traditional ritual has been holding for more than 800 years.

Adashino was used to be the funeral place in Kyoto from olden time. There are about 8,000 stone pagodas and Buddhist statues in the temple precinct. Elegant and mysterious world will be created after visitors light candles in the precinct. This is one of Sagano area's representative summer rituals.

Hanagasa Odori in Kuta
Aug. 24 (Thurs.)
Shikobuchi Shrine and other venues

To show the gratitude for the rich harvest of the year, participants will tour starting from Ueno-miya Shrine to Okawa Shrine and then finally reach to Shikobuchi Shrine where prayer will be offered to the deity.
Access: From JR Kosei Line "Katada," take Kojaku Bus bound to Hosokawa, get off at "Ume-no-ki" about 6km from Umenoki.

Matsuage
This is a fire festival that has been inherited in rural part of Kyoto. Matsuage is the act of throwing up the torch. It is believed that spirits of deceased people come back to this world at the beginning of the obon period and they must go back to the other world as obon finishes. And this ritual is to send off the spirits of the dead, a simple but very dynamic one.
*Please note that the all the places stated below, the day trip is impossible with route buses.

Lit-up: around 21:00 (will be held in case of small rain)
About 1,000 torches that are stand beside the river will be lit-up all together. The torch will be thrown up in a high sky to light the big umbrella that is set in 20 meter above. It makes a truly a dynamic scene to compete lit-up by throwing torch by hands.
Access: From "Demachiyanagi," take Kyoto Bus bound to Hirogawara (about 90-min.) to "Hanase Koryu-no-Mori"

Agematsu at Oshio

This ritual is to dedicate the holy fire to the Atago Shrine (parking place available).

Matsuage at Kuta Miyano-cho

Torches will be thrown above to the main post by hands. This ritual is the part of obon events and called "cha-chan-ko" among locals. The preparation for the Matsuage will be held from 9:00 of 22nd. Until on this day, Matsuage will be exhibited.
Access: From JR Kosei Line "Katada," take Kojaku Bus bound to Hosokawa and get off at "Umenoki" It will be about 6km from Umenoki.

Matsuage at Kumogahata
Aug. 24 (Thurs.)
Kumogahata (Nakahata-cho, Deya-cho)
Light up: around 20:00
This ritual is to pray for preventing fire and good harvest to the god of Atago Myo-jin.
On the top of the small mountain, the character will be set up with wood and when it is light up, the character will loom out of the dark sky.
Access: From "Kitaoji-eki-mae," take Kumogahata Bus Moku Moku bound to "Kumogahata Iwaya-bashi" (takes about 30-min.) and get off either at "Koun-ji, Deya, Fukuzo-in-mae"

Light up: around 20:30 (will be held in case of light rain)
This ritual is to pray for preventing fire and wish for safety of one's family by dedicating the holy-lighting to Atago Shrine. Also the ritual has a meaning of praying for ancestors.
Access: From Keihan Demachiyanagi, take Kyoto Bus bound to Hirogawara, get off at "Shimo-no-cho" (takes about 2-hours)

Kyoto's Obon Summer Religious Ritual - Manto-e

Stone lanterns set on the temple approach and paper lanterns in the precinct will be light up and the temple will be surrounded by solemn atmosphere.

*The big lanterns memorial service: 8th - 10th: From 20:00
A lanterns are set in shape of a Chinese character "Dai (big)" on the temple precinct which is a symbol to welcome the spirits of deceased family members. On the 16th from 18:00, a ceremony to send the spirits back to the other world will be held.

Urabon Manto Ceremony at Mibu Temple
Aug. 9 (Wed.) - 16 (Wed.)
The spirits of deceased family members will be welcomed on the 9th and 10th, send them back to the other world will be held on the 16th. About 1,200 lanterns and candle light bulb will be lit during the ceremony period which is from the 9th to 16th (sunset - 21:00).

Sanzen-in Temple
The temple precinct will be lit with 10,000 candles to worship ancestors' spirits. This is the memorial service that have been continued for praying for 1,000 years.

Higashi Otani Manto-e at Higashi Otani Cemetery

The temple precinct and cemetery will be lit up with 10,000 lanterns during the period so that people can visit their family grave during night time.

The shrine precinct will be full of people who visit the shrine to pray for the safety life of family and making big dream come true. People make wishes by writing down a wish on paper lantern (500 yen for one side).

Experience Kyoto's Folk Entertainment - Rokusai Nenbutsu
The Rokusai Nenbutsu is one of Kyoto's traditional folk entertainments related to religion. Performers dance while they chant Buddhist sutras. Rokusai Nenbutsu is designated as the intangible important cultural properties.

This is known as one of the Kyoto's Rokuji-zo Meguri and the ceremony starts around 20:00.

Jozen-ji Temple
The ceremony will be held at the same time with Rokujizo Meguri. Starts at around 19:30.

Sagano Rokusai Nenbutsu

Amida Temple (Saga)
As part of the obon events, "Issan-uchi" Rokusai Nenbutsu will be offered to the deity. Starts at around 20:00.

Kisshoin Rokusai Nenbutsu

Kisshoin Tenman-gu Shrine
The ritual will be held during the summer grand festival dedicated to the Michizane Sugawara (famous scholar during the Heian period). It will start at around 20:00.

Umezu Rokusai Nenbutsu

Umenomiya Taisha Shrine
Start at around 19:00. The ceremony will be held as for an annual festival of Saga Emperor who had a deep connection with the shrine.

Kuze Rokusai Nenbutsu
Aug. 31 (Thurs.)
Zao-do Kofuku-ji Temple
The nenbutsu chant will be offered at the part of Hassaku festival's Horakukai. Starts at around 20:00

Sagano Rokusai Nenbutsu

Matsuno-o Taisha Shrine

Himuro Pond in Kaju-ji Temple
Elegant building in the precinct makes the wonderful scenery.

The Kyoyo-chi Pond in the temple's stroll-style garden will be full of white, red and yellow water lily flowers.

Water lilies bloom in the pond of the "Garden of Lily." The garden was designed to incorporate Japanese motifs that were imagined by Monet and other artists.

【Bellflower】

The temple has a garden called "the Tale of Genji". The garden ground is covered with white gravels on which green moss grows. Bellflowers add more color on the garden.
