The 65th Kitano Odori

Kamishichiken Kaburenjo Theatre
Kitano Odori is the annual spring dance performance of geiko and maiko in Kamishichiken, and it starts on the 25th, which is the go-ennichi important date of Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine. Their comprehensible theatrical dance which emphasizes the story is highly popular with many dialogues adopted based on the dance element.

Kyoto Art Theater Shunjuza (in Kyoto University of Art and Design)
Due to the seismic retrofitting of Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theatre, this year's Miyako Odori will be held at the Kyoto Art Theater Shunjuza under the title of "Miyako Odori in Shunjuza." This is one of Kyoto's representative spring events which receives a high reputation each year.

Spring Doll Exhibition in Monzeki Nunnery Temple

Annual spring special doll exhibition is held at Hokyo-ji Temple. Gosho imperial dolls and Dairi-bina dolls will be exhibited. Also, their various elegant sliding door paintings and garden are worth seeing.

Special Opening of Temple Treasuries (Nehan-zu Special Opening)

Nehan-zu painting by Tohaku Hasegawa will be displayed. Their garden which is designated as a National Scenic Beauty designed by famous gardener, Honami Koetsu will be open to the public.

Here, Hatto Hall, Ho-jo (Abbot's quarter) and bath room will be open to the public. There is a famous "Banryu-zu (crying dragon)" ceiling painting in the Hatto Hall.

Kodai-ji Temple
The temple is related to Kitano Mandokoro, a wife of the famous war lord Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The makie lacquer wares exhibited at this temple are known as the best pieces from 16-17th century of the Momoyama period. Their garden designed by Enshu Kobori is designated as a National Historic Site and National Scenic Beauty.

Spring Special Opening "The Origin of Higashiyama Culture: Togu-do Hall (National Treasure)"

Ginkaku-ji Temple
Ginkaku-ji Temple was built by the 8th Tokugawa Shogunate, Yoshimasa Ashikaga. The Togu-do Hall Dojinsai is the National Treasure tea ceremony room which is said to be the place where culture of tea ceremony, flower arrangement and incense manner prospered. Another tea ceremony room, Rosei-tei, will be also open to the public.

Shoren-in Temple
Originally, the temple was Awata-Gosho Imperial Palace and used as the study place during the 18th century for the Emperor Go Sakura-machi. Visitors can experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony during the special opening period.

Shoden Eigen-in Temple

Opening of Sub-temples in the Daitoku-ji Temple Complex

Their Main Hall, Kuri and Kara-mon gate are the national treasures. Its Kuri (the priests' quarters) is the oldest existing Zen temple's building in Japan.

Jukkoku-bune is a boat that carried sake, rice and passengers on Yodo River in the Edo period (1600-1868). The revived boat carries 15 passengers and the tour takes about a 55-min. round trip and runs the Uji River where willow trees and sake breweries are making a great scenery.

Chuyu-sai Festival

This shrine is worshipped as the deity of sake, and another name for the festival is Brewer's Thanks Giving Day. On this day, all kinds of brewers gather here from all over Japan.

To-ji Temple
This is to commemorate the priest Kukai, who was the founder of the sect and the monk will give a memorial service for him. Also the popular Kobo-san, a huge market will be held on this day in the precinct.

Honen Shonin Gyoki Dai-e Ceremony

Hyakumanben Chionji Temple
This is the birth place of the popular Buddhist priest, Honen Shonin. People gather here and pass huge rosary next to each other praying for the recovery of illness.

Matsuno-o Shrine
This festival has over 1,000 years of history. Around 11:00, six mikoshi portable shrines will be carried out of the shrine and will be brought to Katsura River. At around noon, the mikoshi will be sailed on the Katsura River on boats from the north east side of Katsura Imperial Villa.

Elegant event will be held at the garden, where the Heian period atmosphere remains. The game was played by people wearing aristocrat costumes in those days. The reciting of poems and some music will be played. Outdoor tea ceremony will be held in the garden as well.

"Shrine Garden in Rakunan"

Here, a traditional Heian-period poetry game will be recreated. 7 people dressed in the Heian-period costumes sit by the stream in the shrine garden. A small sake cup will be released on the stream and people have to create a short poem before the cup arrives in front of them. Free of charge to enter the event. In the precinct, traditional Shira-Byoshi dance performance will be held from 14:00 (programs are subject to change due to rain).

[Traditional Song/Kyogen]

The shrine worships the deity of sake and this annual festival is the most important one of the year. Visitors will be able to enjoy Kyogen comic play and the traditional Japanese music.

Saga Dainenbutsu Kyogen

Seiryo-ji Temple (Saga Shaka-do Temple)
Saga Dainenbutsu Kyogen is one of three most important Kyogen plays in Kyoto along with the Mibu Kyogen and Senbon Enma-do Kyogen. Free of charge to watch the plays on these days. The play will start from 13:30, 14:30 and 15:30 each day.

Mibu Temple
Mibu kyogen is a traditional Buddhist play using no words which is said to be inherited from the nenbutsu Buddhist chanting made by priest Enkaku. Performers wear masks and use humorous gestures to express the story. In the opening, "Horaku-wari" will be played, which is a dynamic performance that unglazed dishes will be cracked one after another by performers.

The origin of this festival is said to have started in the Heian period. When a bad plaque spread in the country, the Buddhist monk Kuya performed the Nenbutsu Buddhist sutra dance to stop it.

Seiryu-en Garden in Nijo Castle
This is a popular cherry blossom party held at Nijo Castle. This place was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa for the purpose of protecting Kyoto Imperial Palace and also for accommodating shoguns when they visited Kyoto. Seiryu-en Garden is generally closed to the public, but is open on this day and visitors can enjoy the tea and a light meal party under the cherry blossoms. (When the weather is fine, outdoor tea ceremony will be held.)

Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival

Hirano Shrine is one of famous cherry blossom viewing sites in Kyoto. The precinct will be lit-up at night when the cherry blossoms are in its best time from late March to the middle of April.

Daigo-ji Temple
Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a powerful samurai lord in the 16th century held a large scale cherry blossom viewing party at this temple. The festival recreates his party. Procession will go around the precinct where surrounded by 2,000 cherry trees. (A rain-or-shine-event)
Daigo Cherry Blossom event will be held from April 1 to 21.
