Kyoto Higashiyama Hana Touro (Lighting Up) 201717-03-1.JPG

18:00-21:30 (Light-up time)
This is an early spring event of Kyoto. For approximately 5 km route, from a southern part of Kiyomizu to Maruyama Park, through Yasaka Shrine to northern Shoren-in Temple, around 2,500 of LED light will be lit up, and also flower arrangements will be displayed along the street. Truly a rich and fantastic atmosphere will be created at this event. Also near-by shrines and temples will open their gardens, and lighting up events will be held at the same time.

Other Events

"Flower arrangements and Lighting up street" by Kyoto based company ROHM
At the walking path of Higashiyama area which has an elegant Japanese taste with its white wall and stone pavement, about 2,500 LED lanterns and flower arrangement works will be displayed.

Ikebana Flower Arrangement Promenade
Large scale ikebana flower arrangements (cooperation from Kyoto Ikebana Association) will be displayed along the main route.

Modern Ikebana Exhibition by Kyoto Ikebana Association
Displaying all kinds of modern, audacious flower arrangement works by young flower arrangement teachers will be held (cooperation from Kyoto Ikebana Association).

Bamboo lighting/Magnificent River Flow
Subtle lantern's light made with bamboo and candle will be set around the stream within Maruyama Park fantastically.

Dedicated dance performance by Maiko
Dedicated dance performance by maiko from 5 major kagai district will be held at Yasaka shrine. The gorgeous dance will offer a beautiful spectacle to visitors.

Practicing fire prevention / Song & dance by kids
Near-by elementary children will sing and dance the tale of "fire prevention" song while parading.

Shoren-in Temple
A popular tea ceremony room called "Kobun-tei" was used as the study room for the retired Emperor Gosakuramachi. This tea room will be open to the public, and a formal tea ceremony can be enjoyed.

Its Kuri (the monk's office and kitchen, etc.) is the oldest one which exists amongst all the Zen temples in Japan.

This place is Oda Nobunaga's family temple. A wooden statue (important cultural property) of Nobunaga will be open to the public.

This is a family temple of Maeda, one of the renowned famous war-lords.
The Main hall, front gate and Kara-mon-gate (all important cultural properties) were built during the Muromachi period and is the representative building style of Zen sect.

This temple was built by Kitano Mandokoro, a wife of a famous warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The garden has several important cultural properties, such as "Kasa-tei," "Shigure-tei" tea ceremony rooms and also Kangetsu-dai. The lit-up-trees reflecting its silhouette in the pond will show visitors a mystic view.

The Hozugawa Kudari is a river ride that goes from Kameoka to Arashiyama, Kyoto (about 16km in 2 hours) along a stunning river gorge of rapids with wonderful mountain views.

Sake Brewery Opening

Fushimi Sake Cooperative Association
Winter is the time when year's newly brewed sake is released. At this timing, sake breweries in Fushimi will be open to the public and visitors can enjoy fresh sake and many other events. Tasting freshly made new sake and special Japanese kasu-jiru soup (charged), also sake manju bean cake, Kyoto vegetables, pickles, dried cuttlefish and flower will be sold as well on this day.

Ikenobo, one of the flower arrangement schools in Kyoto will dedicate the flower arrangement as for the memorial service, and also the very popular nun, Setouchi Jyakucho will give an outdoor lecture (TBA), etc.

The God of Rain "Takao Kami-no Kami" is worshiped at this shrine and people will pray for rain and good autumn harvest for the year.

Geino Jotatsu Kigan Festival

Kokuzo Horin-ji Temple
People visit this temple to pray for an improvement of their art and performance skills.
A kyogen theatre performance will be held after the prayer service on this day.

Kiyomizu Temple
The gods who protect a large blue dragon (the symbol of this temple) will parade through the temple area. A huge puppet of blue dragon manipulated by dozens of people (embodying each god) will go around the temple precinct. The parade will be led by "Tempo-shu" with blowing a conch shell. Followed by "E-bu-gyo," "Yasha-jin" and "Shiten-no" who protect dragon at the front and back and finally "Ju-roku-zen-jin" will follow.

As for having a memorial service for the monk Kokei, who was a close friend of Sen-no-Rikyu (great tea master), a matcha green tea will be offered at the tea ceremony room.

Izumi Shikibu-ki

Zuishin-in Temple
Children in traditional costumes sing and dance in this celebrated annual performance that commemorates Onono Komachi (a legendary beautiful woman). The dance will be performed 3 to 4 times in a day starting from 11:00. On the day before the event (25th), a dedicated traditional dance will be performed.

A grand Nehan-e picture of 6 meters by 4 meters, which is believed to be the greatest numbers of animals in Japan were painted, will be displayed during the period.

The size of the painting is 16 meters by 8 meters and it is the biggest one in Japan, which drawn in the middle of the Edo period. The Nehan-e memorial service will be held on the 15th.

Honpo-ji Temple

Highlight of Plum

[Rakuchu Central Area]

This shrine is a famous plum viewing spot which enshrines Michizane Sugawara who loved plum tree. About 1,500 plum trees with various kinds and colors can be enjoyed. The renowned old plum tree can be enjoyed starting from January, and other plum trees starting to bloom around early February and can be enjoyed through March.
Best time: Early Feb. - late Mar.

Kyoto Imperial Park
About 230 flower trees including famous plum forest near Hamaguri-go-mon gate can be enjoyed.

The flower figures are beautiful at here and they are called "Hane-zu plum."

In this holy "Rakusui-en" garden, about 150 weeping plum trees can be enjoyed. Camellia flowers also bloom at the same time and the "Weeping Plum Trees and Camellia Festival" will be held from February 18th to March 22nd.

[Rakusai Western Area]

About 35 kinds of 550 white and red plum trees will bloom beautifully together. On February 11th, the sweet sake festival will be held. Another festival "Ume Ume-sai" will be held on the March 5th as well.

Jojakko-ji Temple
Bonbai dwarf plum trees will started to be displayed in February. All-together, the number of the Bonbai dwarf pot will be about 30 and visitors can enjoy a charming view.

Jonan-gu Shrine
