Smoking in the city's public are is banned by an ordinance of Kyoto City. Particularly central city area is designed as "Prohibited areas of smoking on the street." If one smokes in these areas, a 1,000-yen will be fined. Non-Japanese people are not exception. Don't waste your precious 1,000 yen for smoking! The city has decided to expand the prohibited area from February 1st. The newly added areas are around Kyoto Station, Kiyomizu Temple and Gion.
The expanded areas in February are the most popular areas for tourists. Special watching staffs regularly go around the area.
A few foreigners were fined as they didn't know the ordinance. Please smoke only designated area where ashtray is available.
